Marilyn Monroe was more than an actress.  She symbolized the beginnings of a much broader movement in American society in the two decades after the Second World War.  Her personal and professional lives reflected both the stereotypes and realities of women in that era. The resulting contradictions helped to launch the movement for gender equality.
