DESCRIPTION:Трансляция с субтитрами на русском языке.  \n“All Aboard”!  It was a cry millions of Americans heard in the 19th and 20th centuries.  Railroads helped to build America.  Railroads carried the hopes and dreams of settlers across the vast continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific\, and goods and produce as well.  The traffic had a major impact on Indigenous Peoples\, on the land itself\, and on the nation’s economy.   \nBy the mid-20th century\, however\, automobiles\, trucks\, and airplanes had surpassed the railroad as carriers of freight\, and especially of passengers.  As other countries upgraded their rail systems\, the U.S. allowed their railroads to deteriorate.  We’ll explore how and why this happened\, and what the future holds for railroad transportation in the U.S. \nLed by David R. Goldfield – American historian\, writer\, film director\, and professor. He is the author of sixteen books\, including Black\, White\, and Southern: Race Relations and Southern Culture and Cotton Fields and Skyscrapers.

DESCRIPTION:Alexander Hamilton\, despite a very modest birth\, rose to become a key architect of American government. After serving as an aide to General George Washington during the American Revolution\, Hamilton devoted his career to strengthening the new nation. He believed it was possible to establish a central government strong enough to sustain itself and its people while at the same time providing a voice for the people in running that government. Of all America’s founders\, Hamilton’s ideas about popular government remain the most relevant today. \nDavid R. Goldfield is an American historian\, writer\, film director\, and professor. He is a long-time supporter of the Democratic Party. He is the author of sixteen books\, including Black\, White\, and Southern: Race Relations and Southern Culture and Cotton Fields and Skyscrapers.

SUMMARY:Alexis in America: A Russian Grand Duke’s Tour
DESCRIPTION:In 1871-72\, Russian Tsar Alexander II’s son\, Grand Duke Alexis\, traveled through the United States for three months. Although his trip had a diplomatic purpose\, there was a private reason as well – Alexis had fallen in love with an older woman who was not of royal blood\, and the Tsar hoped an extended trip abroad would squelch the romance. \nWhile Alexis traveled through America’s biggest cities of the period and met artists\, politicians\, and other memorable figures such as George Armstrong Custer and Buffalo Bill\, he pined for his sweetheart back home. Americans fawned over the young Russian\, fêting him with dinners\, parades\, and balls\, and clamoring for the chance to be near royalty. \nThe visit highlighted U.S.-Russia relations\, but also raised interesting questions about America’s national identity – some people asked if a democratic country should host a member of a notoriously oppressive monarchy. In the end\, the visit was both a diplomatic venture and a cultural exchange in a particularly interesting moment in history\, only a few years after the American Civil War and a few decades before the Russian Revolution. \nDr. Lee A. Farrow is Chair of the Department of History and World Cultures\, Distinguished Research Professor and Distinguished Teaching Professor at Auburn University at Montgomery\, in Montgomery\, Alabama. She grew up in Louisiana and received her PhD from Tulane University. Her area of expertise is Russian History\, with a focus on the history of Russian-American Relations. She is the author of The Catacazy Affair and the Uneasy Path of Russian-American Relations (2021)\, Seward’s Folly: A New Look at the Alaska Purchase (2017)\, and Alexis in America: A Russian Grand Duke’s Tour\, 1871-72 (2014).

Each session will include practical advice\, concrete examples\, and guided activities that lead teachers through the process of planning a camp. \n  \nSession topics include: \n  \n\nThe Immersion Camp Mindset\nEstablishing Community & Meeting Campers Needs\nIntegrating English within a Themed Camp\nHolistic Youth Development at Camp\nCamp Planning Logistics\n\n  \nParticipants will also participate in and gain access to a repository of materials for various camp activity types\, such as: \n  \n\nCamp Assemblies\nSongs\nStories and Chants\nIce-breakers and Team Building Activities\nWorkshops\nIndoor and Outdoor Full Group Games\n\n  \nSession activities will build toward the development of a set of comprehensive plans for a \nthemed English immersion camp. In the final course session\, participants will present and \nreceive feedback on their plans. Upon completion of the course\, teachers will be able to foster \na camping mindset\, and will have tools\, materials\, and resources to develop immersive English camps in their communities. \n  \nIn addition\, they will network with each other to share materials and support camp programs in the future. Participants who participate in 4 of the 6 sessions will receive a certificate. \n  \nFacilitator Biography \n  \nTabitha Kidwell teaches in the TESOL program at American University in Washington\, DC and \nholds a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics and Language Education from the University of Maryland\, \nCollege Park. She has conducted professional development for language teachers around the \nworld and is a frequent presenter at regional and international TESOL conferences. Tabitha \nespecially enjoys working with English teachers and students in immersion camp settings. Shehas led camp programs in Indonesia\, the Dominican Republic\, Madagascar\, Tanzania\, and the US. In her free time\, Tabitha enjoys hiking\, kayaking\, and spending time with her 2-year-old son. \n  \n
