SUMMARY:Walt Whitman and Langston Hughes: Poets of American Aspiration in White and Black
DESCRIPTION:Walt Whitman and Langston Hughes are two of America’s most inspirational poets\, one white\, the other Black. \nWhitman’s 19th century poetry depicted a new nation\, increasingly urban\, increasingly diverse\, and with unlimited prospects. Yet\, he also noted the challenges in preserving a democratic form of government. \nHughes\, writing in the 20th century\, also acknowledged the possibilities of urban America. He admired Whitman’s work and borrowed some of his themes. And\, like Whitman\, Hughes highlighted the gaps between American ideals and American reality\, particularly for people of color. \nLed by David R. Goldfield – American historian\, writer\, film director\, and professor. He is the author of sixteen books\, including Black\, White\, and Southern: Race Relations and Southern Culture and Cotton Fields and Skyscrapers.

SUMMARY:"A Woman's World" - Dr. David Goldfield
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1960s\, American women have experienced significant advances in work\, education\, legal status\, political visibility\, and athletics.  Yet\, it seems that feminism has stalled if not regressed in recent years\, particularly in terms of childcare legislation\, maternity leave\, and pay equity. \nChanges in public policy\, and class and race fissures among women themselves have accounted in part for this halt in progress.  What needs to be done to reignite the movement to bring the US in line with other industrialized nations?

SUMMARY:A Place Called Home: Public Housing and Race in America
DESCRIPTION:Until the 1930s\, housing in America was primarily a private enterprise. But the Great Migration of Blacks from the farm to the city\, and from the South to the North created severe housing shortages. As a way to address the population crunch as well as to generate work during the Great Depression\, the US government began to subsidize housing for the poor and working classes. \nThe idea was that good houses make good people and\, besides\, these apartments would be temporary places to live as residents moved up to better jobs and neighborhoods.  It did not quite work out that way.  And this is why. \nSpeaker: Professor David R. Goldfield\, an American historian\, writer\, film director\, and professor.
