Business Movie Club: discussing the film Jerry Maguire

On December 17, our Business Book Club will once again transform into the Business Movie Club! We will watch selected clips and discuss Cameron Crowe’s film Jerry Maguire.

The main character, Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise), is a successful sports agent who is going through a personal and professional crisis. Realizing that the agency’s work methods put profit above people, he decides to leave and start his own small agency based on honesty and fairness. His only client is talented but challenging football player Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.). Together with accountant Dorothy Boyd (Renée Zellweger), Jerry learns to build trusting relationships and value people more than business metrics.

The film was released in 1996 with a budget of about $50 million, and its worldwide box office exceeded $270 million. Jerry Maguire received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for several prestigious awards, including two Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actor (Cuba Gooding Jr. – winner) and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film was also nominated for a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards.
