Enrollment Open for a Free Online Legal English Course

If you want to feel more confident in an international legal environment, work effectively with English-language legal sources, and actively develop your Legal English through discussion and practice, this course is for you.

We invite law students, legal professionals, civil servants, and judges with an English level of B2 or higher who want to:

  • expand their Legal English vocabulary;
  • learn how to navigate English-language legal sources (court decisions, legal journals);
  • improve oral legal argumentation skills;
  • develop the ability to draft legal documents and professional correspondence;
  • practice explaining the Belarusian legal system to an international audience.

About the Course

The Legal English Course is a series of interactive, practice-oriented workshops featuring live discussions, applied tasks, and opportunities to compare Belarusian legal norms and legal culture with the American common law system.

The course focuses on developing Legal English skills relevant to public law, while also being applicable to legal research and professional practice. Participants will work on:

  • drafting legal and procedural documents (briefs, memos, motions);
  • mastering the vocabulary and conventions of academic legal writing;
  • developing oral advocacy skills and courtroom language;
  • strategies for working with English-language legal sources and case law.

Key Topics Include:

  • the structure and practical functioning of the U.S. legal system, including judicial review and the role of the U.S. Supreme Court;
  • vocabulary and interpretation of the U.S. Constitution;
  • fundamental rights and their judicial protection (freedom of speech, due process);
  • online legal research;
  • case argumentation in U.S. courts;
  • contemporary challenges in U.S. public law and comparative legal approaches.

The program responds to the growing need among Belarusian legal professionals for access to internationally relevant knowledge and the development of skills necessary for working in a global legal environment.

Instructor

The course will be taught by Danielle Capretti, a Legal English expert with professional experience in 15 countries. She is a graduate of Syracuse University College of Law (with honors) and has taught Legal English at the University of Augsburg (Germany). She has worked with lawyers, judges, and public officials. Danielle values active participation, discussion, and the exchange of professional experience, including engagement with Belarusian legal practice.

Format and Schedule

  • Online (Zoom)
  • First session: January 12, 2026, 7:00–8:30 PM (Minsk time)
  • Session length: 1.5 hours
  • Course duration: 10 weeks

Selection and Placement Test

Participant selection is based on motivation. Applicants who pass the selection stage will be required to complete an English placement test between January 8 and January 12, 2026.
