Speaking Club: Learning English through Memes!

Memes are not just funny pictures on the internet. They reflect everyday life, cultural features, and convey the views and moods of people today. And on top of that, they are an incredibly effective way to learn English!

At our speaking club session with Anelli Arana, a teacher and university professor from Florida, we will explore:

  • What makes people laugh in the US?
We’ll understand which jokes are popular, why they go viral, and how humor reflects values and habits in the United States.
  • Memes as a mirror of everyday life
We’ll look at memes that show ordinary situations: studying, work, friendship, and American life hacks. We’ll discuss which ones are most “recognizable” to people in the US and why.
  • Memes + slang = real-life language
Using memes as examples, we’ll learn current phrases, expressions, and slang that are actually used in everyday conversations. We’ll also practice using them in dialogues.
  • Cultural context and hidden meanings
We’ll see how memes help us understand not just the language, but also the way people think. Why some jokes are immediately understandable, while others require knowledge of history, pop culture, or current events.
