Speaking Club: The Oscars — Hollywood’s Biggest Night

The Academy Awards are more than just film prizes. They are an event that gathers millions of viewers every year, sparks discussions in the news, memes, and social media, and reflects cultural trends in the United States. It is also a great opportunity to talk about movies and practice real-life English!

At our speaking club meeting with Anelli Arana, a university lecturer from Florida, we will discuss:

Why are the Oscars so important to Americans?
We will explore the role the ceremony plays in U.S. culture, how winning an award can change the careers of actors and directors, and why millions of people follow the nominations and results each year.

The most memorable moments in the ceremony’s history
We will recall iconic Oscar moments: surprising wins, emotional speeches, record-breaking achievements, and scenes that became part of pop culture.

This year’s films
We will get to know the movies everyone is talking about this season: their stories, key themes, and which ones may become the main favorites of the awards.

Cinema, language, and cultural context
We will learn useful phrases and vocabulary often used when discussing films, awards, and acting — and practice using them in conversation.

Join us on March 26 at 18:00 (Minsk time).
